Planer boards work great for suspended walleye or when the walleye are schooled very close to shore. The key to using planer boards is to get your bait as far away from the boat as possible. Obviously you can still be wildly successful without utilizing boards, but if you do you'll have put yourself in a position to net a TON of walleye because you'll be a lot more versatile.

One of the key elements of running planner boards that you need to be aware of at all times is the stability of your boards. A planer board should be able to plane smoothly in rough spots, and should be able to perform well at the slower speeds that are often used while trolling for walleye. One of the best walleye baits to use while running planer boards are crankbaits. You need to run at a slower speed to be successful when using crankbaits for walleye. By now you have figured out that you need to have your planer boards fine tuned for slower speeds when you are fishing for walleye because the majority of your time will be spent trolling for walleye at slower speeds. It is very important to always check your boards before you go trolling for walleye. Keeping you boards fine tuned and the surface of the boards in good shape can make the difference of you having a successful fishing trip. Remember your planer boards need to perform well at slower trolling speeds.

When you are fishing with planerboards it is important to remember that one set depth will not always work. Keep close attention to you depthfinder and fish finder to identify where to set your depths. Experimentation is very important to find your walleye catching sweet spot.

Lets talk walleye fishing tackle while using your boards. You need to have snap weights when you put your tackle list together. They make it very simple place your weights and you will only have to do it one time. If you need to change weights all you have to do is press and release to ad a different weight. This saves you time out on the water.

One of the most common questions about using planerboards for walleye is "how far back should your walleye bait and your weight be from the planer board? This is an excellent question but there is no definite answer because it will depend on how active the walleye are on any given day. If they are aggressive you can keep the baits closer to the weight, even as close as 15 feet. On slow days where the walleyes are in a picky mood you need to place your weight and walleye baits farther back as much as 40 feet. To start your day out on the water set your baits for walleye and the weight back about 40 feet. This is an excellent starting point and will make it easier for you to make adjustments farther back or closer in once you determine how active the walleyes are.

Another frequently asked question about running boards is "what would I need to get started running planer boards?" A basic planer board setup will consist of several boards, rod holders, snap weights and a couple of rods each about 7ft armed with 10 to 12 pound test
