Crappie jigs are a excellent way to hook a huge slab. How many times when you have been out fishing have you wondered what crappie fishing jig to use? There are so many types, sizes, colors to select from it is easy to get confused. Well let me explain exactly what a crappie fishing jig is, What crappie jig type to use for different situations, and what color to use.

What exactly makes up a jig?

The fishing for crappie jig is made up of the two parts, the first part has a hook with a sinker molded too it. The second part is the body and it is made up of a variety of different items, plastics for curly tails, some type of hair or bristle for marabou jigs, add a spoon or blade to a marabou jig and you have a rooster tail.

What is the jigs purpose?

Use your crappie jig to attract fish by moving the jig in vertical motion through the water. Never confuse the spinner baits action with that of the crappie jig. Spinner baits move through the water horizontally when they are real in through the water wear as jigs move up and down in a vertical motion through the water.

What criteria do I use to select the right jig?

Well I wish I could say that it is totally cut and dry what to use for different situations but a lot of selection is trial and error. I recommend you keep a physical fishing log of all your crappie jig fishing activities making sure you identify even the smallest of details, so the next time you are out fishing you use this information to make your jig selections more effective.Use the water condition and good old mother nature to select the color of jig you will fish with. Check out this simple example of what I use to select the right crappie fishing jig color. If the water clarity is murky and the day is somewhat over cast I would select a dark chartreuse color.I want to make it perfectly clear that color selection for your jigs may not always be correct your first pick, you need to understand that there is much trial and error when you fish for crappie with artificial baits, and you may try several colors before you hit on the right combination for the day.

How many types of jigs are there?

Crappie Jigs can be divided into three types. Rooster tail jigs, curly tail jigs, and marabou jigs to name a few of my favorites. Rooster tail jigs are a modified marabou jig that has a added spinner blade attached. Real hair, or a imitation of hair is commonly used to make marabou jigs. Curly tail jigs are the most common jig available just about anywhere. They a made from multiple types of plastic and in many different shapes and colors. They come in hundreds of different colors, sizes and shapes.
