Fishing With Minnows

Minnows can be fished using a variety of minnow rigging methods. They can be fished stationary or in motion under a cork. They can be tightline fished. They can be trolled. They can be cast and retrieved. They can be used with a combination of fishing jigs You can use minnow rigging that is set up for one at a time or two minnows in tandem. The ways in which you can hook a minnow for crappie are almost endless and are only limited by your imagination and experiences.

Some effective rigging for crappie will be discussed in some detail in the following paragraphs. A few basic principles on how to hook a minnow for crappie will be discussed first. For example, it is best to use a fine wired long shank hook for your crappie rigging so that you won't injure the minnow. Long shank hooks are also useful when you extract a hook out of a fish's mouth because they limit the chances of injury. There are a number different hook styles you could use to hook a minnow for crappie, but the most common way, and effective way is using a number 4 to number 1 Aberdeen style hook used to hook a small to medium sized minnow. You need to pick a hook size for your crappie rigging that is proportional to the size of the minnows you intend to fish with. A no. 4 to no. 1 Aberdeen style should be used to hook a small to medium sized minnow. Now if you are after large slabs, then you need to change your hook size to a 1/0 to 2/0 Aberdeen style hook when rigging for crappie, and also use a larger 2 to 3 inch long minnow.

Don't overlook details, make sure you watch with care how you are hooking your minnows and always keep your bait fresh. The lip hook method probably is the best way on how to hook a minnow for crappie. Very simple just run your hook up through the bottom and top lip, making sure the minnow can wiggle freely, and the barb is sticking out. This method of hooking your minnow works well still fishing, cast and retrieve or while you are trolling. Many anglers also hook their minnow through the back dorsal fin when still fishing and the method of crappie rigging works well too.

Rigging For Crappie Tip:

When crappies seem skittish, fish the outer edge of cover with no bobber on your minnow rigging. Your minnow will sink very slowly squirming and jiggling signaling a wounded fish and this should entice the crappie to strike, they have a rough time passing up an easy meal.
